PHMC Statement

“We have to be very careful in the gay and lesbian community not to hold on to any indifference to the suffering of any other human being” -Bayard Rustin

Our hearts are heavy in the wake of recent violence against our Black siblings across the country. While some are tired of hearing about this issue, we recognize that we are not as tired as Black people are of the senseless violence they are repeatedly targeted with. You are seen, you are heard, and we are with you.

The LGBT+ liberation and Black liberation movements have always been intertwined, and none of us will be free until all of us are free. As a reminder, Stonewall was also a riot against unjust violence and persecution by the police. PHMC condemns current actions against the black community, while also acknowledging that racism exists within the LGBT+ community. Perfect Harmony will always be open to those of all races, genders, and sexualiaties, and we are committed to creating a safe space for everyone and addressing inequality within our community. We hope that everyone finds a way to be safe, but not silent.

As many of us are remaining home in quarantine, we would like to take this time to share a resource that has been circulating to help educate all of us further on systemic racism in the US.

Perfect Harmony is Madison’s only self-identified LGBT+ TTBB chorus – made up of gay, bisexual, transgender men, and their allies.

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the cancellation of our spring concert in May. For the safety of their residents, Capitol Lakes Retirement Center cancelled any meetings for groups outside of their residents, leaving us without a rehearsal space, followed by Governor Evers’ announcement that we are ‘Safer At Home’. With so few rehearsals before the concert, we don’t feel like we can provide the type of performance that you have come to expect.

Perfect Harmony has always been about more than our performances. At its heart, our work is about bringing people together in a safe place and inspiring social change. That is just as true today as it was over 23 years ago when our founders demanded that, during a pivotal period of the HIV/AIDS crisis in the United States, LGBTQ people needed a space to belong and the dignity of being heard. That was the home they built, and it is yours today.
