Perfect Harmony creates, enriches, and transforms community through music.
We sing to make a better world.
Perfect Harmony Chorus is Madison’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and ally TTBB chorus. Our membership of 35 singers provides LGBT+ persons with opportunities for the performance of choral music in a supportive and affirming environment. Through music, we enrich the lives of our members, the LGBT+ community, and our Southern Wisconsin community at large.
As of 2019, following a vote by our board of directors, Perfect Harmony welcomes all singers with tenor, baritone, or bass (TTBB) vocal ranges, regardless of gender, gender expression, or sexuality. President Burt Towers said that “The topic of gender is more fluid than it ever has been and we are compelled to examine our current policies that guide us in our mission to ‘create, enrich, and transform’ our present-day community through music.”
We presents three major programs each year, beginning with our holiday concert in early December, a fundraiser cabaret in early March, and concluding with a late spring concert. In addition to these programs, we also donate our time by performing at special events throughout the year.
July 17, 1997 saw 10 brave men performing their first concert. Since then, Perfect Harmony has grown and performed music as diverse as its members, with concerts combining a mixture of classical, contemporary, popular, sacred, and Broadway music. To mark our 10th and 15th Anniversaries we celebrated by commissioning several new choral works. This included the full length song cycle, “Heartlands,” which was composed by former member Arthur Durkee and drew inspiration from the lives of our own chorus members. In 2019 we were proud to be among the co-commissioning choruses, led by New York City Gay Men’s Chorus and the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles, of “Quiet No More: A Choral Celebration of Stonewall,” marking the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprisings.
Perfect Harmony is a member of GALA Choruses, Inc. a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization serving the LGBT choruses of North America. The mission of GALA Choruses is to empower LGBT Choruses as we change our world through song. They are the catalysts, providing enthusiasm, resources, and tools to inspire member choruses. They harmonize a diverse group of people through respect and understanding to foster musical excellence, collaboration, cooperation, acceptance, transparency, and opportunities for all. They are listeners who solve issues and promote the common welfare of our movement. And they are leaders, giving direction to our work as we sing to make a better world where all voices are free.
