OUR VOICE May 2017

Musically Speaking

by Kevin Hage, Interim Artistic Director

We are currently in the midst of our 20th anniversary season. The spring concert is a celebration of the past and an exhibition of our current work with a look to the future. We are singing some repertoire from earlier years of our history, that are of special importance to Perfect Harmony. Additionally, we are learning music that is new to our eyes as we strive to continue growing in many new ways. The theme of this anniversary performance is Devotion/Commitment. This theme is a wonderful common thread through the show’s music to signify the chorus’ growth over the past twenty years.

Perfect Harmony Men’s Chorus is thrilled to be working with Margaret Cornils Luke! We commissioned a piece by her to commemorate our 20th anniversary. She composed a fanfare style piece for us with words from current members of the chorus. Margaret posed the question "What has Perfect Harmony meant to you?" to our members and used these quotes to write the text for the piece. We are excited to premiere her work, "Twenty Years," at our anniversary concert.

In case you have not met me yet, I am the current Interim Artistic Director of Perfect Harmony Men’s Chorus. Additionally, I am also an elementary music teacher with the Madison Metropolitan School District. My background includes performances with a variety of university and community choirs in both Wisconsin and Iowa. Additionally, I have toured and performed with choirs throughout Wisconsin, Iowa, Germany and the Czech Republic. I received a Bachelor of Science in Music Education, with emphases in Choral and General Music Education, from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. And finally, I am also an alumni brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a national men's music fraternity.

The chorus has been extremely busy singing a large variety of performances. Beyond our concerts and fundraisers, we have sung the national anthem for two different hockey leagues and performed a couple selections at the Urban League for a World AIDS Day event. Our Cabaret this past March was a huge success, both musically and from a fundraising standpoint. We are excited to continue creating, enriching and transforming community through music!
